Call of Duty is back on a Nintendo console. Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and Activision says it’s the first time in more than a decade that a mainline Call of Duty has come to a Nintendo platform. The last one was Ghosts on the Wii U in 2013, as Kotaku and IGN both note.
That makes for a real choice if you own more than one system. Is the Switch 2 version good enough to be your main copy, or should you stick with PS5 or Xbox? We haven’t played any version, so this is based on what Activision and Nintendo have confirmed and on what outlets reported from pre-launch sessions.
The basics
- Launch date: October 23, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2, per Activision.
- Not on last-gen: It isn’t coming to PS4 or Xbox One, per Activision, and it isn’t playable on the original Switch, according to Nintendo’s listing.
- Price: The Standard Edition is $69.99 and the Vault Edition is $99.99 on Xbox, PlayStation and Battle.net, per those official stores. Activision lists a $30 Vault upgrade. For Switch 2 pricing, check the Nintendo eShop. We couldn’t confirm a US Switch 2 price.
- Early access: Campaign Early Access is live now on Switch 2 for digital pre-orders, according to Nintendo’s regional store pages.
How the Switch 2 version was made

This isn’t a cloud-streamed port. Activision says the Switch 2 version is developed natively by Infinity Ward with Digital Legends, and IGN describes it the same way.
Activision also says the game has full cross-platform play, so Switch 2 players join the same lobbies as everyone else. Kotaku notes the Switch 2 version launches “alongside PC, Xbox, and PS5.” That matters for a multiplayer shooter. You won’t be stuck in a small, separate player pool.
Switch 2 performance: what outlets report

None of this is official. Activision hasn’t published Switch 2 resolution or frame rate figures, so everything below is reported from pre-launch hands-on sessions and beta builds. Final launch performance may be different.
Campaign (Reported, IGN): IGN reports the campaign is locked at 30fps and ran at 4K docked, and that it stayed stable in heavy scenes during its session. IGN also reports visibly lower texture detail than the PC, PS5 and Series X versions. On feel, IGN described the controls as “every bit as snappy.”
Multiplayer, docked (Reported, Kotaku): Kotaku reports multiplayer targets 60fps and mostly holds it when docked, but with heavy visual cutbacks. On a TV, Kotaku calls the image “blurry.”
Multiplayer, handheld (Reported, Kotaku and Insider Gaming): Kotaku reports handheld play rarely goes above about 45fps. Insider Gaming quotes Digital Legends saying handheld “currently reaches around 44 FPS,” with optimization still ongoing, and that the studio’s target is 60fps docked multiplayer.
Put simply, outlets are describing a version that works and plays well, with a clear visual step down from the other consoles. Kotaku is the more critical of the two. IGN’s take is gentler, and its headline argues the port isn’t the disaster people might expect.
Physical vs digital
If you want a disc or cartridge, the platform choice is easy. Activision lists physical editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X only. On Switch 2, it’s sold as a digital Standard or Vault Edition.
Going digital on PS5? The download is split into large content packs. Our PS5 storage guide covers the reported MW4 sizes and how to make room before launch.
Online play
On Switch 2, online multiplayer requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, sold separately, per Nintendo’s listing. PS5 and Xbox have their own online subscription requirements too, so this isn’t a reason to pick one platform over another. Just budget for whichever one you’ll use.
The case for each version
For Switch 2:
- It’s the only way to play mainline Call of Duty portably on a Nintendo console, and the first chance in over a decade.
- It’s a native version, not cloud streaming, according to Activision.
- Cross-play means you’re in the same lobbies as PS5, Xbox and PC players.
- IGN reports smooth campaign play and responsive controls.
For PS5, Xbox or PC:
- Outlets report clearly better visuals on PS5, Series X and PC.
- Handheld Switch 2 multiplayer reportedly runs around 44 to 45fps, not 60.
- Physical copies exist only for PS5 and Xbox Series X, per Activision.
- The $69.99 price is confirmed on those platforms. The Switch 2 price isn’t confirmed yet.
Who should buy which

Switch 2 is a good fit if it’s the only console you own, or you mostly play handheld and value portability over visuals. Based on what outlets report, it’s a workable way to play, and cross-play keeps you in the main player pool.
PS5, Xbox or PC is the better pick if you already own one and play mostly on a TV. Outlets say those versions look and run better, and you can buy a physical copy.
Wait a few days if you’re torn. The reported numbers come from preview and beta builds, and launch-week coverage should show how the final version holds up.
Our take
If Switch 2 is your only console or you play mostly handheld, the reported results make Modern Warfare 4 a viable option there, with cross-play keeping you in the same lobbies as everyone else. If you own a PS5, Xbox or gaming PC, buy it there. Outlets say those versions look and run better, and they’re the only ones with physical editions. Either way, check the eShop for the Switch 2 price before you commit, and treat the performance reports as previews rather than final verdicts.
