The iPhone Duo goes on sale Friday, October 23, and if you didn’t pre-order, don’t count on walking into an Apple Store and leaving with one. Online delivery dates slid to late January within about half an hour of pre-orders opening, according to MacRumors. Apple hasn’t said whether stores will have any phones to sell to walk-in customers. And a MacRumors report says some store staff expect little or no walk-in stock.
So walk-in stock looks limited at best. We haven’t tested the iPhone Duo, and we haven’t spoken to Apple Stores or checked store inventory ourselves. This guide sticks to what Apple has said and what outlets have reported.
What Apple has actually said

Apple hasn’t posted a Newsroom update about stock, but it gave the press an on-record statement after pre-orders opened. The Verge and Bloomberg both reported it. Apple said demand has been “nothing short of extraordinary” and that “we will continue accepting orders online.” It also said its teams “look forward to welcoming customers at Apple Stores worldwide to experience the iPhone Duo.” The Verge notes Apple said this without disclosing whether inventory would be available for people who didn’t pre-order.
Apple’s iPhone Duo page is worded carefully too. It says the phone is available “on apple.com and at select carriers and partner stores” starting October 23, and that “you can also see it in person at all Apple Store locations.” You can book a session to shop with a Specialist. That’s Apple’s wording, and “see it in person” isn’t the same as “buy it today.”
Confirmed dates and prices:
- Pre-orders: Opened Friday, October 16, at 5 a.m. PT (8 a.m. ET) on apple.com and in the Apple Store app, in more than 70 countries and regions.
- Launch: Friday, October 23, with first pre-order deliveries that day.
- More countries: 28 more countries and regions on October 30.
- Price: From $1,999 for 256GB, with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB options, in star white and night sky. Apple lists $83.29 a month over 24 months, or Apple Upgrade leasing from $57.99 a month.
Apple hasn’t announced store opening hours, queue systems or purchase limits for launch day.
What’s been reported
Online dates slipped fast. MacRumors reports US delivery estimates for every configuration moved to around January 25, 2027, within about 30 minutes of pre-orders opening. The Verge said late January within an hour, and Bloomberg said the end of January.
Pickup appeared, then vanished. MacRumors reports that in-store pickup reservations briefly showed up, then were turned off. MacRumors reports the online store now tells shoppers to check back on October 24 for pickup availability. That’s a “check back,” not a promise of stock.
One report about walk-ins. MacRumors, citing Apple Store employees, reported on October 17 that staff “have been instructed to discourage customers without pre-orders from coming in.” This is unconfirmed. Apple hasn’t said anything like it, and MacRumors itself says it “remains unclear how firm the warning… is and whether it applies worldwide.” 9to5Mac covered it too, but cites MacRumors rather than separate sources.
Why supply is tight. MacRumors relayed a Nikkei Asia report that output was a few hundred units a day in late August. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple at one point thought sales could slip to November, and MacRumors, citing Gurman, says stock is expected to remain limited.
Demo units, not sale units. Per Gurman via MacRumors, stores are getting display fixtures and demo devices, with more than 150 at the Fifth Avenue store and about 20 at a typical store. That fits Apple’s “see it in person” wording. Those are for trying, not buying.
How to actually get one
Here are your realistic options, from most to least reliable.
1. Keep (or place) an online order.
- Confirmed: Apple says it will keep accepting orders online.
- Reported: MacRumors notes Apple has sometimes shipped constrained iPhones earlier than first quoted, with “no guarantees.”
- Expect: A January date for now. Holding your place in line costs nothing until it ships.
2. Check for store pickup from Saturday, October 24.
- Reported: MacRumors says Apple’s online store tells shoppers to check back October 24.
- Expect: Maybe nothing at first. Check the Apple Store app, and keep checking. This isn’t a restock date.
3. Try carriers and partner stores.
- Confirmed: Apple’s page lists “select carriers and partner stores,” noting availability is up to each partner.
- Expect: Dates that may differ from Apple’s. Treat any carrier estimate as just that, an estimate, and call ahead.
4. Visit an Apple Store to try it.
- Confirmed: Apple says you can see it in person at all Apple Store locations.
- Reported: Walk-in stock is expected to be limited, and MacRumors’ staff report suggests some stores may have none.
- Expect: If you go on October 23 without a pre-order, be ready to leave without a phone.
Launch-week checklist

- Sort trade-in and financing early. Apple’s newsroom says you can set up trade-in and financing or leasing pre-approval ahead of time.
- Turn on Apple Store app notifications and check your order page for any date changes.
- Pre-order holders: deliveries start October 23. For pickup orders, follow what your order page says.
- Avoid scalpers. 9to5Mac spotted resale listings asking up to $10,000. Buy only from Apple, your carrier or an authorized retailer.
Should you wait anyway?

If January feels like a long time, it’s worth asking whether a $1,999 first-generation foldable is right for you at all. Our iPhone Duo worth-it guide covers who it makes sense for and who’s better off with the iPhone 18 Pro. Reading full reviews once they’re out is another good reason not to rush.
Our take
Don’t plan your launch day around walking in and buying an iPhone Duo. Apple hasn’t said there’s walk-in stock, online orders show late January, and the best sign of store pickup so far is a “check back October 24” message. If you want one, keep your online order in place, check for pickup from October 24, and ask your carrier. Visit a store to try it, not to buy it.
