The New Apple TV 4K Costs $299 Now. Is It Worth It Over a $50 Streaming Stick?

Apple's fourth-generation Apple TV 4K brings an A19 chip, Siri AI, and hands-free voice control at $299. Here's who it's for, who's fine with a cheap stick, and whether 2022 owners should upgrade.

Apple announced a new Apple TV 4K on October 13, and the headline for most people isn’t the chip or the new Siri. It’s the price. The fourth-generation model costs $299 in the U.S., and it goes on sale November 13. That’s several times what a basic 4K streaming stick costs, and it lands after a year in which Apple already raised the price of the old model.

So is it worth it? For some households, yes. For a lot of people, a stick does the job just as well. And if you bought the 2022 model, you can probably keep it.

We haven’t used the new Apple TV 4K. This is based on Apple’s announcement, its pricing, and reporting from major outlets.

What’s new in the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K

Here’s what Apple says is new.

A19 chip. Apple says it delivers up to 50% faster CPU performance and up to twice the graphics performance of the previous generation, plus a dedicated AV1 decoder for more efficient streaming.

Siri AI and far-field microphones. The new box has three built-in microphones, so you can talk to Siri without picking up the remote. Siri AI is Apple’s new, more conversational Siri. You can ask follow-up questions about what you’re watching, and with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, it can use personal context, like a show a friend recommended in Messages. Apple lists it as a beta, and it needs an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad in the household.

HomePod surround sound. For the first time, you can pair four HomePod mini 2 or second-generation HomePod speakers as a front-and-rear surround setup, as long as the pairs match.

A smarter remote. The Siri Remote keeps its design but adds Find My with Precision Finding and a built-in speaker so you can make it play a sound. Precision Finding needs a recent iPhone.

Connectivity and storage. MacRumors reports that it comes in one configuration with 128GB of storage, Wi-Fi 7, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.1, and Bluetooth 6. MacRumors also guessed it “likely” has 8GB of memory, but Apple hasn’t said, so don’t treat that as a spec.

How the price got here

The 2022 Apple TV 4K launched at $129 for the Wi-Fi model with 64GB, and $149 for the Wi-Fi plus Ethernet model with 128GB. Both used Apple’s A15 Bionic chip. In June 2026, Apple raised those prices to $199 and $249, citing the memory chip shortage that pushed up prices across its lineup, according to MacRumors.

So the new $299 model is $50 more than the old 128GB model’s raised price, and about double its original launch price. CNBC described it as a jump from $199 to $299, comparing it with the cheaper Wi-Fi model.

Who the new Apple TV 4K is for

People already invested in Apple. If your household runs on iPhones, the Apple TV fits in neatly. It works with AirPlay, FaceTime through Continuity Camera, iCloud Photos screen savers, and Apple Fitness+. The new Siri features need an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad anyway, so this is a box built for Apple households.

Anyone who wants a home hub. Apple TV acts as a hub for Apple Home, which lets you control smart home gear when you’re away and run automations. It supports Thread, and Apple says doorbell notifications can appear on the TV. If you use HomeKit, an Apple TV or HomePod is close to essential, and having the hub in your TV cabinet is convenient.

HomePod owners building a home theater. The four-speaker surround setup is new to this model, so it’s the main reason to choose it over the old one.

Apple Arcade players. Apple pitches the box as a way to play Apple Arcade and App Store games on the big screen, and the faster A19 should help there.

People who care about privacy and a cleaner interface. Apple says microphone data is processed in isolated parts of the A19 chip that tvOS, apps, and Apple can’t access, and that Siri requests use on-device processing or Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. The home screen is also built around your apps rather than sponsored rows. In our streaming stick guide, the most common complaint about Fire TV was the ads and Amazon promotions on the home screen. Apple TV avoids most of that, though it still promotes its own Apple TV app.

Who’s fine with a streaming stick

For most people, a streaming stick is the better buy. The 4K Fire TV and Roku sticks in our streaming stick guide handle 4K and HDR on the major streaming apps and have voice remotes, for a fraction of Apple’s price. Roku’s simple app-grid home screen is especially easy for parents and kids.

A stick makes more sense if:

  • You mostly watch Netflix, YouTube, and other big apps, and don’t care about the extras.
  • You’re on Android, where the Apple TV loses a lot of its ecosystem perks.
  • The TV is in a bedroom, guest room, or kid’s room.
  • You have an HD TV, where any 4K device is overkill.

Apple TV does have advantages on performance, privacy, and home hub features. Whether those are worth $299 depends on how much of Apple’s world you live in.

Should 2022 Apple TV 4K owners upgrade?

Probably not. There’s an important detail in Apple’s announcement: Siri AI is also coming to the Apple TV 4K (second generation) and later as a beta. So the 2022 model gets the new conversational Siri, as long as you have an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad.

What you’d be paying for is:

  • Hands-free voice control through the built-in microphones.
  • Four-speaker HomePod surround.
  • The faster A19 chip and AV1 decoding.
  • Wi-Fi 7.

If you own HomePods and want that surround setup, upgrading makes sense. If you just want the new remote, Apple sells it separately, and Apple says it works with Apple TV HD and earlier Apple TV 4K models. Note that the play-a-sound feature is exclusive to the newest remote, and Precision Finding needs a recent iPhone.

Owners of older models, like the first Apple TV 4K or the Apple TV HD, have more to gain. Even then, it’s worth comparing against a stick if you don’t need the Apple extras.

Our take

The new Apple TV 4K is the best streaming box for Apple households, especially if you use Apple Home or own HomePods. But at $299, it’s a premium accessory, not a must-have. Most people with a 4K TV will be just as happy with a 4K Fire TV or Roku stick, and 2022 owners should hold on to what they have, since they’re getting Siri AI anyway.
