Why Spider-Man: Brand New Day Costs $25 to Rent, and Whether You Should Wait

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on digital for $24.99 to rent and $29.99 to buy. Here's why early rentals cost that much, how prices usually fall, and when it's likely to reach streaming.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day came home on October 6, and the price raised some eyebrows: $24.99 to rent, $29.99 to buy. That’s a lot for a 48-hour rental, even for the biggest movie of the year.

Here’s the short version. If you’re watching with a group, renting now is fair value. If you’re watching alone and don’t mind waiting, you’ll almost certainly pay less later. Below is what you get for the money, why early rentals are priced this way, and what’s known about streaming. No spoilers.

The basics: dates, prices and where to watch

Digital release: October 6, 2026. The Hollywood Reporter said it went live at 12 a.m. ET (9 p.m. PT on October 5).

Price: $24.99 to rent and $29.99 to buy, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Forbes. Rentals give you a 48-hour viewing window once you start.

Where: The Hollywood Reporter lists Prime Video and Apple TV. Forbes adds Fandango at Home and YouTube. Screen Rant also lists Fandango.

Disc: DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD arrive December 15, Media Play News reports. Editions include a standard 4K disc and two Steelbook editions, one of them a limited collector’s edition.

Picture and sound: FlatpanelsHD reports up to 4K Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos on Apple TV, and 4K HDR on Amazon and Fandango. Formats vary by store, so check the listing before you pay. It also found an IMAX Enhanced version in Sony’s own Sony Pictures Core app. In the US there, it’s 1080p, not 4K.

Bonus features: Media Play News says the digital, Blu-ray and 4K versions include an outtakes reel and 10 featurettes, covering the cast, the stunts, the suit and Easter eggs. Screen Rant says digital purchases include the extras. We couldn’t confirm that rentals include them, so assume they don’t.

Why an early rental costs $25

This is premium video on demand, or PVOD. It’s the first window when a movie is available at home, and it’s priced high on purpose.

It’s still in theaters. Studios charge a premium while a film is still playing on big screens. The price is aimed at people who want it now rather than later. MovieWeb, citing IndieWire, noted in 2024 that studios keep about 80% of a PVOD rental after platform fees.

$24.99 is the new top tier. For years, $19.99 was the standard PVOD rental price. The Variety and IndieWire coverage from 2020 both describe it that way. By 2024, MovieWeb reported that big releases such as The Wild Robot and Alien: Romulus were renting for $24.99. Brand New Day sits at that higher tier. TV Fandom Lounge argued that it’s still about $5 more than most other new PVOD releases right now.

The theater-to-home gap is short. Brand New Day opened in theaters on July 31, so it hit digital about 67 days later, per Screen Rant. That’s a longer theatrical run than many recent releases. FlatpanelsHD notes that Sony’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire went to PVOD after about 50 days. In 2020, Variety reported that Universal’s theater deals allowed PVOD in as little as 17 days, or 31 days for big openers.

How prices usually drop

PVOD prices don’t last forever. Movies usually move to cheaper standard rentals a few weeks or months later. Some sourced examples:

  • Birds of Prey (2020): dropped from $19.99 to a $5.99 rental about two weeks after its PVOD debut, IndieWire reported.
  • Baby Girl: went from a $19.99 PVOD rental to $5.99 standard rental, according to box office analyst Tom Brueggemann.
  • The Wild Robot: debuted on PVOD on October 15, 2024, with a reduced-price rental listed for December 31, 2024, per When To Stream.

Sony hasn’t announced when Brand New Day’s price will drop. We wouldn’t count on a specific date until stores actually change the price.

When will it stream?

No streaming date has been announced.

Under Sony’s current US deals, Sony’s movies go to Netflix first after their theatrical and home-video windows, then to Disney’s platforms, including Disney+. Variety and Reuters reported this in 2021. That deal covers Sony’s 2022 to 2026 theatrical slate, which includes Brand New Day.

How long Netflix keeps Sony movies exclusively has been reported differently. Reuters said 18 months, while trade site FilmTake described a nine-month exclusive window before Disney gets access. Either way, Disney+ is the second stop, not the first.

For a sense of timing, Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opened in theaters on June 2, 2023, and reached Netflix in the US on October 31, 2023, per Deadline and Variety. If Brand New Day follows a similar gap, that would point to a Netflix arrival around the end of the year or early 2027. That’s our estimate based on one past example, not an announcement.

The “$25 to rent?” reaction

The price got pushback online, and some outlets amplified it. TV Fandom Lounge called it “kind of infuriating.” It argued that a film that has grossed about $2.5 billion is being priced at a premium simply because people will pay. Others shrugged. Pirates & Princesses pointed out that renting saves only five dollars over buying: “If there’s any chance you’ll watch it twice, buying is the easy call.”

Both points are fair. The rental price is high, and the gap between renting and buying is unusually small.

Rent, buy or wait?

Rent it for a group movie night. Split four ways, $24.99 works out to about $6.25 each. If you’re setting up the living room TV for it, our streaming sticks guide covers the easiest ways to get 4K HDR on an older TV.

Buy it if anyone in the house will rewatch it, especially kids. For $5 more, you keep it and get the bonus features.

Wait if you’re watching alone and you’re not in a hurry. Streaming on Netflix is the likely next stop, and the rental price is likely to fall over time.

Wait for the disc if you want the best version to keep. The December 15 4K disc and Steelbooks are the choice for collectors.

Our take

$24.99 is a lot for a 48-hour rental, but it’s priced for people who want it now. If you’re watching with friends or family, rent it and split the cost. If you’re watching alone, wait. Netflix is the likely next stop under Sony’s deal, though no date is set. And if you think you’ll watch it more than once, skip the rental and buy, since it’s only $5 more.
