Yes. On October 21, 2026, EA said it is closing BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, and ending early development on the next Mass Effect game. The games you already own weren’t part of the announcement. Mass Effect Legendary Edition and Dragon Age: The Veilguard were still on sale on Steam when we checked on October 24, and EA’s User Agreement promises at least 30 days’ notice before it shuts down a game or service. EA and BioWare haven’t announced any other plans for the series.

What changed
BioWare announced the news itself in a short post on its official blog, signed by the studio: “Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.”
EA’s own memo, from Cam Weber, president and chief studios officer, and David Tinson, president and COO, said a small team had been in early development on Mass Effect. “We’ve made the decision not to move forward with this development, which means we’re closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace,” they wrote. The same memo says EA is continuing work on Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game.
The closure is part of wider cuts at EA. Bloomberg reported that about 400 jobs are affected, including about 50 at BioWare, according to Reuters and AP. EA hasn’t published its own figure. Its memo says “we will support impacted employees in exploring other opportunities within EA, and we’re committed to treating impacted colleagues with care and respect.” BioWare wrote that its focus is “on our incredibly talented team who put their hearts into these games, and supporting one another through this transition.”
From all of us at BioWare, thank you for being the most meaningful part of our story.

What it means for the games you own
EA’s memo and BioWare’s post cover the studio and the next game. Neither announces any change to the existing Mass Effect or Dragon Age games.
If EA ever does retire an online service, its User Agreement sets a minimum warning period: “If we decide to shut down a game or a service, we will tell you at least 30 days in advance.” EA posts those notices on its service updates page.
The TV show and N7 Day
Amazon’s Mass Effect series is a separate project. IGN reported on October 22 that sources inside Prime Video say it “remains in development at Amazon MGM Studios.” Amazon MGM declined to comment to The Verge, and EA spokesperson Justin Higgs told the outlet, “Nothing to share on that at this point.”
N7 Day falls on November 7. It’s BioWare’s yearly celebration of the series, and the studio has used it for Mass Effect news. On N7 Day 2025, Mass Effect executive producer Mike Gamble wrote on BioWare’s blog that “the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe.”
This year EA and BioWare haven’t announced any N7 Day plans. Kotaku reported on October 23 that Mass Effect cosmetics in Battlefield 6, which it said were presumably meant for N7 Day, were removed from that game’s store after the closure news. Kotaku said it had asked EA for comment.
