QSSR, short for Quick Spectral Super Resolution, is Sony’s new AI upscaler for the standard PS5. Sony announced it on October 1 as “a new performance tier of AI upscaling,” a lighter version of the PSSR upscaler on PS5 Pro. Two games have it so far: Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
GTA 6 isn’t on that list yet. Neither Sony nor Rockstar has said the game will use QSSR, and Digital Foundry didn’t spot it in the PS5-captured launch trailer.
What QSSR does
An upscaler lets a game draw each frame at a lower resolution, then rebuild a sharper image for your TV. Sony’s PSSR does this with AI on PS5 Pro. QSSR brings the same idea to the standard PS5.
Sony says QSSR came out of Project Amethyst, its AI graphics work with AMD. It rests on “a streamlined neural network architecture” and “a hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5.”
Sony also sets expectations: “While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, QSSR provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5.”
The Verge explains the gap. The standard PS5 has no dedicated machine learning silicon, so “you should probably expect closer to an upscaled 1440p resolution on PS5 instead of the upscaled 4K on PS5 Pro.”
fundamentally a drop-in replacement for titles that already support PSSR
Where the setting lives
QSSR arrives game by game, through patches. Sony’s announcement says both launch titles “are being patched today to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.” After updating, look in that game’s own graphics menu.
Marvel’s Wolverine turns it on for you. Insomniac’s v1.002 patch notes, as published by Push Square, read: “Uses QSSR on PS5, on by default.” Sony’s post confirms the option for Ghost of Yōtei, so check that game’s graphics settings after the update.
More games should follow. Sony’s Daniel Craig told Digital Foundry that QSSR is “fundamentally a drop-in replacement for titles that already support PSSR,” The Verge reports, and Sony says it “will be offered broadly to all PlayStation developers.”
Which PS5 gets what
The same facts as a table. Standard PS5 gets QSSR. PS5 Pro stays on PSSR.
| Standard PS5 | PS5 Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Upscaler | QSSR | PSSR, which Sony calls the gold standard |
| Where it shows up | An in-game graphics option in supported games. On by default in Marvel’s Wolverine. | Marvel’s Wolverine has supported enhanced PSSR since launch. |
| What to expect | Closer to an upscaled 1440p resolution, per The Verge | The upscaled 4K on PS5 Pro, per The Verge |
| Games so far | Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei | Enhanced PSSR on Marvel’s Wolverine since launch |
| GTA 6 | QSSR is not confirmed. Digital Foundry didn’t spot it in the launch trailer. | Listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced. Sony doesn’t name an upscaler. |
Which games have it now
As of October 24, the list is Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, both patched on October 1. PlayStation’s Wolverine page now says the game “has been patched to use Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR)” and “has also supported enhanced PSSR on PS5 Pro models since launch.”
Will GTA 6 use QSSR?
It isn’t confirmed. Sony’s GTA VI page carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced label and highlights fast loading, Tempest 3D Audio and DualSense features. That page and Sony’s June 24 GTA VI blog post don’t name QSSR or PSSR.
Digital Foundry went looking anyway. Push Square reports that Digital Foundry’s Rich Leadbetter, speaking in a 20-minute video about the launch trailer, said: “I don’t think we’re seeing it here. If the internal rendering resolution is 1440p, then what is QSSR doing?”
He also laid out the cost, per Push Square: “If it’s going to be upscaling to 4K, based on the numbers we have looking at Quality Mode in Marvel’s Wolverine, you’re looking at 4ms to do an upscale to 4K. And if you’ve got a 33ms render budget, that’s well over 10% of your rendering budget just on QSSR. That’s quite extravagant.”
Push Square adds a caveat of its own: the trailer “was likely captured using older footage,” and the final game could change before November 19.
For standard PS5 owners, that leaves one firm takeaway. Sony plans to offer QSSR to every PlayStation developer, and Rockstar hasn’t said whether GTA 6 uses it. We’ll update this page when either company does.
Quick answers
Is QSSR the same as PSSR? No. Sony calls QSSR a “quick new evolution of PSSR” built for the standard PS5. PSSR stays on PS5 Pro.
Do I need to turn QSSR on? In Marvel’s Wolverine, it’s on by default after the v1.002 patch. In Ghost of Yōtei, check the graphics settings.
Does PS5 Pro use QSSR? Sony positions PSSR as the PS5 Pro upscaler and QSSR as the standard PS5 one. Marvel’s Wolverine, for example, uses PSSR on PS5 Pro.
