MW4 Is Kicking Dead Players for Inactivity While They Spectate. Here's What We Know.

Some Modern Warfare 4 players are being kicked from Multiplayer matches while they spectate, with a “Kicked for inactivity” notice. Activision’s @CODUpdates account confirmed on October 22 that the team is investigating. As of October 24 there’s no fix and no official workaround. Players say Search and Destroy gets hit hardest, because a death there leaves you spectating for the rest of the round. For now, report it to Activision support and watch @CODUpdates and the official Trello card for the fix.

What’s happening

The kick hits players who are spectating, not playing. You die, the camera switches to a teammate, and the game drops you with a short dialog: “NOTICE / Kicked for inactivity. / EXIT”.

One player, @Moisty4k, posted a screenshot of that dialog on October 22: “i died at the start of the round in SnD and got kicked before the round ended LOL @CallofDuty please fix”.

The official Call of Duty Updates account posted this at 8:39 PM CT on October 22:

We're investigating an issue causing some players to be kicked while spectating in Multiplayer.

The post links to a card on the official MW4 Trello board, which lists the issue as under investigation. The post names no mode, platform or cause. The launch patch notes from October 21, and the October 23 launch update, list no spectator fix.

Who’s affected

Activision says “some players” in Multiplayer. The mode question comes from players. HardcoreSND, a site focused on competitive Search and Destroy, argues it hurts most in one-life modes and labels that reading “ours, not theirs.”

In Search, the spectator seat is not a waiting room. It is a job.

In Search and Destroy you can’t respawn, so after an early death you spectate until the round ends. That’s a long stretch of watching, and a kick removes you from the whole match, not just one round.

What players are saying

Activision’s post names no mode. In the X posts we reviewed, though, 37 of 41 named Search and Destroy, and most said they were dead or spectating when the notice appeared. The costs they reported were lost matches, a lost kill streak and a broken party.

Player @FJResto described the same moment: “I was watching my team continue the fight waiting for the next round and was kicked for inactivity.”

I love the MP @InfinityWard @CallofDuty but if you end up getting crossed mapped at the start of Search and Destroy you end up getting kicked for inactivity while you’re dead. It happened to a few people who I was playing with today and it was mildly frustrating.

There’s no confirmed fix on the player side yet. Here’s a short check to tell this issue apart from a regular idle kick, then the steps that help.

If it matches, do this

• Report it through Activision Support with platform, mode and time.
• Follow @CODUpdates and the Trello card.
• Scrims: agree on replay rules for spectator kicks before you start.
