Here’s the honest answer first: Rockstar hasn’t announced what time Grand Theft Auto VI unlocks, and it hasn’t published a download size. What’s confirmed is the date, November 19, 2026, and that digital pre-orders can pre-load from November 12.
What we do have is reported store-listing data, relayed by Digital Foundry, that points to a rolling midnight unlock around the world. We’ve laid that out below, clearly labeled, along with a launch-week checklist. We’ll update this post when Rockstar or the console stores publish an official unlock time or file size. We haven’t played GTA 6, and this guide is based on Rockstar, Take-Two and outlet reporting.
Confirmed

These come from Take-Two’s announcement and Rockstar’s support pages, with outlet coverage alongside:
- Launch date: November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. GamesRadar+ reports the same.
- Pre-load: Digital pre-orders can pre-load from local midnight on November 12, seven days early, per Rockstar Support. Codes from boxed copies that are redeemed before launch pre-load from the same date. TweakTown and Digital Foundry report this too.
- Boxed copies: The physical version is a download code in a box, on sale November 12 “to support pre-loading,” per Take-Two. Every copy is a full download, which TweakTown also reports.
- No file size yet: Rockstar hasn’t published a download or install size as of October 17. TweakTown says “Rockstar hasn’t confirmed an official file size,” and GAMINGbible reports the same.
- No unlock hour yet: Rockstar hasn’t announced a launch time. Digital Foundry says “nothing has been confirmed here.”
Not yet announced
| Item | Status | When it might appear |
|---|---|---|
| Official unlock hour | Not announced by Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft | Digital Foundry notes these decisions can come a few weeks before launch, so watch Rockstar Newswire and the PlayStation Blog in early November |
| Download and install size (PS5, Xbox) | Not announced | Should show on PS Store and Xbox Store listings by pre-load on November 12. That’s an expectation, not an announcement |
| Day-one patch size | Not announced | Launch week |
We’ll update this post as each of these is confirmed.
Reported: when GTA 6 may unlock
This section is reported, not announced. Regional PlayStation Store timestamps, collated by fan site GTAVice.net and relayed by Digital Foundry, show GTA 6 unlocking at midnight on November 19 in each store region’s main time zone. Eurogamer Poland has covered the same listings. That would mean 15 unlock windows spread over about 19 hours, with New Zealand first and Mexico and Central America last.
Digital Foundry adds an important caveat. Publishers sometimes switch to a single global simultaneous release, a decision “usually made only a few weeks before release.” So treat everything below as subject to change.
US and Canada (reported, per store listings)
The listings reportedly put the US and Canada on one shared moment: 12:00 a.m. Eastern on November 19. Digital Foundry says western Canada unlocks at the same moment.
| Time zone | Reported unlock |
|---|---|
| Eastern (ET) | 12:00 a.m., Nov 19 |
| Central (CT) | 11:00 p.m., Nov 18 |
| Mountain (MT) | 10:00 p.m., Nov 18 |
| Pacific (PT) | 9:00 p.m., Nov 18 |
| Alaska (AK) | 8:00 p.m., Nov 18, if the listing holds |
| Hawaii (HI) | 7:00 p.m., Nov 18, if the listing holds |
The Alaska and Hawaii rows are our own time-zone conversion from the reported US unlock, not separate listings. If you’re on the West Coast, that means a reported Wednesday-evening start, not a late night.
Elsewhere (reported, per store listings)
| Region | Reported unlock |
|---|---|
| New Zealand | 12:00 a.m. local, Nov 19 (the first region, per Digital Foundry) |
| Australia (Sydney) | 12:00 a.m. local, Nov 19 |
| Central Europe (CET) | 12:00 a.m. local, Nov 19 |
| UK | 12:00 a.m. local, Nov 19 |
| Mexico and Central America | 12:00 a.m. local, Nov 19 (the last region, per Digital Foundry) |
We’re not covering tricks for changing your console region or time zone to play early. That can cause account problems, and it isn’t something we’d recommend.
Download size: known vs rumor
Known: Rockstar hasn’t published a size, and neither console store lists the real one yet.
Rumor: Figures are circulating online, including a reported number from a leaked development build. TweakTown points out that development builds include debug data and don’t reflect the retail size. A widely shared Xbox listing figure was a placeholder, not the game. We’re not printing any of these numbers as GTA 6’s size.
For context only: TweakTown notes GTA 5 takes up roughly 95GB on PS5. That’s a different, older game, not an estimate for GTA 6.
The practical advice is simple. Don’t start deleting your whole library over an unconfirmed number. TweakTown suggests clearing “a generous amount of space,” and the real figure should appear on the store listings by pre-load day. Our PS5 storage guide covers how to free up space or add more.
Launch-week checklist

- Now: Check your free space and decide what you’d move or delete. Use the PS5 storage guide if you’re short. Haven’t picked a console or edition yet? See GTA 6 on PS5 vs Xbox and GTA 6 Standard vs Ultimate Edition.
- Early November: Watch for any official unlock-time announcement from Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft. If they move to a global simultaneous unlock, the tables above won’t apply.
- November 12: Pre-load opens for digital pre-orders, and boxed copies go on sale. Check the store listing for the official size, then start the download. If you bought a box, redeem the code that day so you can pre-load too. Our post on PlayStation ending game discs explains why boxed games increasingly work this way.
- November 18, evening: If the reported listings hold, the US West Coast can start at 9 p.m. PT. Make sure the pre-load finished and your console is updated.
- November 19: Launch day. Expect a possible day-one patch, size not yet announced.
Our take
Plan around the confirmed dates, not the rumored numbers. Pre-order digitally or redeem your boxed code on November 12 so you can pre-load, and make room before then without panicking over leaked file sizes. In the US and Canada, the reported midnight Eastern unlock is a reasonable working plan, but keep it loose until Rockstar confirms. We’ll update this post when the unlock time and size are official.
FAQ
What time does GTA 6 unlock? Rockstar hasn’t announced it. Store listings reported by Digital Foundry point to midnight local time on November 19 in each store region, and 12:00 a.m. ET (9:00 p.m. PT on November 18) for the US and Canada. That could change.
When can I pre-load GTA 6? From November 12 for digital pre-orders, per Take-Two. Rockstar Support says pre-loading begins at local midnight on November 12.
How big is GTA 6? Not announced. Rockstar hasn’t published a download or install size. It should appear on store listings around pre-load day, and we’ll update this post.
Does the boxed version let me skip the download? No. The physical version is a download code in a box, so every copy is a full download.
