Last checked: October 24, 2026, against the MW4 launch patch (October 23). Season 1 hasn’t started yet.
The best MW4 loadout right now is the Han 86 with an XRK Mil-Tac Suppressor and the SA H86 465mm barrel. It unlocks at Player Level 4, the same level Create-a-Class opens, and it leads the WarzoneLoadout, WZStats and CODMunity rankings. Activision says its high fire rate and moderate damage make it capable in close-quarters and longer-range fights. Once you hit Level 14, the M4 is the next build to make. If you’d rather rush with an SMG, take the VEL 46.
Researched across 16 sources: Activision’s official patch notes and weapons blog, three build guides, four meta trackers, three settings guides, three headset reviews and the Amazon listing. An attachment appears on a card only when two independent build sources list it for that gun. Each card links both sources.

Han 86 I'm under Level 14, or I want one gun for everything

Han 86
Make the Han 86. It unlocks at Player Level 4, handles close to long range, and leads the WarzoneLoadout, WZStats and CODMunity rankings.
Jump to build
M4 build A (suppressed)
Make M4 build A. It pairs a suppressor with a long barrel for players who hold one lane and shoot first, and the M4 unlocks at Player Level 14.
Jump to build
M4 build B (recoil control)
Make M4 build B. It swaps the suppressor for a compensator and adds two grips and a fixed stock, and CODMunity's stats show both grips cutting recoil.

VEL 46
Make the VEL 46, WarzoneLoadout's No. 2 gun overall. Activision describes it as "pairing exceptional maneuverability with smooth, predictable recoil."
Jump to buildBuilds can shift after next week's weapon tuning. We'll update the cards when it lands.
The four builds compared
| Build | Unlocks at | Range | Role | Parts on the card |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Han 86 | Player Level 4 | Close to long | All-rounder, first build to make | 4 confirmed, optic open |
| M4 build A | Player Level 14 | Mid to long | Suppressed lane holder | 4 confirmed, optic open |
| M4 build B | Player Level 14 | Mid | Low-recoil anchor | 5 confirmed |
| VEL 46 | See note below | Close | Fast-moving SMG | 5 confirmed |
Unlock levels come from Activision’s weapons blog. Activision gives the M4 810 rounds per minute against the Han 86’s 740. CODMunity’s data puts the Han 86 at 243 ms to kill within 10 meters and the M4 at 296 ms. That figure is from CODMunity only, and tuning can change it.
Han 86: the meta pick
Per Activision’s Gunsmith notes, muzzles suppress fire or cut recoil, and barrels change damage range and bullet velocity. According to CODMunity’s attachment list, the barrel arrives late in the weapon’s 72 levels, at level 68, and only CODMunity gives that figure. Until then, let Gunny fill the barrel slot. It’s also the most-used gun in CODMunity’s tracked loadouts, though that’s CODMunity’s data alone.
M4 build A: suppressed and long
Activision describes the M4 as “fully automatic and highly adaptable.” This version uses the same suppressor as the Han 86, a long barrel and a stock, and it’s built for players who hold one lane and shoot first.
M4 build B: built for recoil control
This build swaps the suppressor for a compensator and adds two grips and a fixed stock. CODMunity’s attachment stats show both grips cutting recoil, and Insider Gaming pitches the build for accurate mid- to long-range fire.
VEL 46: the SMG pick
The VEL 46 is WarzoneLoadout’s No. 2 gun overall, behind the Han 86, and WZStats lists it among its meta picks. Activision describes it as “pairing exceptional maneuverability with smooth, predictable recoil.” Its Apex attachment, the Snap, removes the stock in exchange for faster weapon swaps. Activision says it “allows Quick Draw when used with Overkill,” so the Overkill perk set fits it. The Snap doesn’t take one of the five slots, so it sits on top of this build.
Activision’s own pages disagree on when the VEL 46 unlocks, so check your Progression menu. If you also want the ISO Nightshade, the only part GameSpot and AS Gaming both list for it is the 40 Round Mag.
Perks that fit the launch slots
Each perk slot takes one perk, and some guides still pair perks that can’t go together at launch. Ninja and Bomb Squad, for example, both sit in Perk 2. These sets come from Gaming Route, and we checked each one against Activision’s slot list.
| Playstyle | Perk 1 | Perk 2 | Perk 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Han 86 or M4 anchor | Ghost (Lv24) | Fast Hands (Lv20) | Cold-Blooded (Lv36) |
| SMG flanker | Ghost (Lv24) | Ninja (Lv30) | Battle Hardened (Lv12) |
| Objective player | Quick Fix (Lv4) | Blood Rush (Lv4) | Battle Hardened (Lv12) |
| VEL 46 Snap with two primaries | Overkill (Lv4) | Fast Hands (Lv20) | Battle Hardened (Lv12) |
Below Level 24, take the objective set. All three of its perks are available by Level 12. Activision’s descriptions:
- Ghost keeps you off UAVs, Portable Radars and Heartbeat Sensors.
- Ninja makes your footsteps quieter and shortens how far they carry.
- Blood Rush turns on Tactical Sprint, and kills refill your stamina.
Before your attachments unlock
- Use Gunny. Activision’s built-in optimizer builds a close-range, balanced or long-range setup from parts you already own. That makes it the quickest way to fill an open slot.
- Unlocks carry over. Each attachment unlocks once and then works on every gun that takes it, so suppressors you unlock on the Han 86 will be ready on the M4.
- Check it in the Firing Range. The Multiplayer range shows your time to kill against dummies at 10, 25, 50 and 100 meters. After a tuning patch, it’s the fastest way to see whether a build has changed.
- Hold off on Weapon Prestige. Activision says Prestige “will relock all of your attachments” and resets the weapon to level zero.
Common recommended controller settings
These are the settings MW4 settings guides most often recommend. They’re starting points, so adjust them to your hands and your controller.
| Setting | Common pick | Recommended by |
|---|---|---|
| Button layout | Tactical (Default if your controller has back buttons) | GameSpot, esports.gg, games.gg |
| Stick sensitivity | 1.65 horizontal and vertical (GameSpot’s range is 1.50 to 1.85) | esports.gg, games.gg |
| Vibration | Off | GameSpot, esports.gg, games.gg |
| Stick deadzone minimum | Low (3 to 5), raised if your stick drifts. GameSpot suggests running Test Stick Deadzone and setting it one point above the result | GameSpot, esports.gg, games.gg |
| L2/R2 deadzone | 5 | GameSpot, esports.gg, games.gg |
| ADS sensitivity multiplier | 0.95, with the Dynamic response curve | esports.gg, games.gg |

A headset for hearing footsteps
MW4 has a whole perk, Ninja, for quieting footsteps, so what you hear matters. If you want one wired headset for PC, PS5 and Xbox, look at the HyperX Cloud III. Its Amazon listing names all three. Reviewers agree on comfort and low end: Tom’s Hardware lists “Very comfortable” and “Fantastic bass,” and PC Gamer lists “Really comfortable” and “Great bass.” TechRadar’s reviewer could pick out far-off enemies in CS:GO and called the detachable mic “amazing.”
The trade-offs are real. TechRadar calls the soundstage “good but nothing special.” On Xbox it plugs into the controller’s 3.5mm jack, and the virtual surround and HyperX software work on PC only.
